New Research on Origins of Wild Cats in Central Europe

A study published by Cambridge University Press reveals new information about the ancient migration and domestication of cats in Europe. Following the arrival of their wild ancestors in Europe from the Near East (the modern Middle East and Western Asia) these cats migrated many millennia ago. Ultimately, the researchers uncovered evidence that Near Eastern wildcats may have arrived in Central Europe a few thousand years earlier than previously thought.

Cats Have Been in Central Europe for a Very Long Time

Researchers have looked at the results of genetic studies and radiocarbon dating tests of the remains of both wild and domestic cats, covering an era ranging back approximately 10,000 years, to the Late Pleistocene period, and moving forward to the late Middle Ages.

Research Findings

The goal of the research project was to uncover as many details as possible about the process of the domestication of cats in central Europe. What the researchers found, however, pushed the previously established timelines back more than a thousand years! This discovery means that wildcats were migrating westward and northward at a surprisingly early date. See the map of the migration patterns:

Unanswered Questions about Cats and the Earliest Neolithic Farmers

If wildcats were roaming Central Europe while the first farming communities were being formed, did wildcats and humans have a symbiotic relationship? If so, did this lead to the semi-domestication of wildcats? Just exactly how far Early Neolithic cats may have penetrated into European territory is unknown. Uncertainty remains about interbreeding of cats between Near Eastern and European wildcats. To track ancestry, ancient cat mandibles (jaw bones) were collected and analyzed.

Selected mandibles of Near Eastern wildcats/domestic cats (a–f) and European wildcats (g–i) (species attribution based on mtDNA): a) Poland, Miechów site 3 (Neolithic); b–c) Poland, Łojewo site 4 and Sławsko Wielkie site 16 (Roman period); d–e) Serbia, Caričin Grad site (Early Byzantine period); f) Poland, Miechów site 3 (Middle Ages); g) Poland, Perspektywiczna Cave (Neolithic); h) Poland, shelter in Smoleń III (pre-Roman period); i) Poland, Perspektywiczna Cave (Middle Ages) (photographs by M. Cats Have Been Shrinking

The first domesticated cats were about the same size as European wildcats, but by Roman times, when cats had become a popular household pet, domesticated felines were noticeably smaller. Over the next few hundred years, they continued to decrease in size, until they were actually smaller than modern cats during the medieval period.

Woman Says Contractor Sealed Her Cat In Bathroom Wall

A woman on TikTok shared that her cat had been sealed into a bathroom wall by a contractor she hired to renovate her bathroom. She had the work completed while she was away on a business trip. The TikTok account @ashlinhadden posted a video of the hole she punched through the wall to free her cat.

Ashlin Hadden says that she hired a contractor to renovate her bathroom while she was traveling for business. When she returned from her trip, her cat was missing. Hadden heard faint meows coming from the bathroom area and determined that the cat was inside the wall.

In the video Hadden says “…the stupid ass contractor dry-walled my cat into the drywall, underneath the bathtub.”

You can view here TikTok video here:

No Title

No Description

In my opinion

This was not the fault of the contractor, but rather Hadden – for a few reasons:

  • Cats should never be left to fend for themselves when their pet parents travel. It’s a fallacy that cats can “take care of themselves.” Who was feeding and cleaning the cat’s litter box while the owner was away? Cats can often get really stressed when their owner isn’t around and also when there are changes to their environment. Two major upsets for a cat. Which brings me to my next point…
  • Any time there’s a change in a pet’s environment, and particularly with cats – the cat will hide. It’s really important to ensure that your cat is in a controlled/closed environment with lots of calming items, like their toys, bedding, etc. Even turning on a TV or radio to muffle noises of construction work can be helpful to lower your cat’s stress.
  • Don’t leave cats unattended particularly when there’s unusual activity like construction or moving going on. This is not the fault of the contractor. The contractor was not hired to watch Ms. Hadden’s cat. It’s likely that the cat slipped in under the tub when the contractor was on a lunch break, or overnight – seeking a small, safe place to hide – or even just to explore.

What do you think? Who is at fault for the cat being sealed into the drywall? Was this the owner’s fault or the contractor’s fault?

Halloween Safety Tips For Cats

Greetings, my pawsome human minions. ‘Tis Forrest Wisewhiskers, here again, with the cat knowledge you yearn to learn.

Halloween is upon us, bringing to life the season of the witch. And when you think of witches, what do you think of next? That’s right, the cat—her faithful familiar. But let me ask you this…is it really the season of the cat, but the witch gets all the credit? Just a thought for you to gnaw on.

I’ve gathered you here, oh faithful minions of the feline, to discuss Halloween safety for your cat. While it’s a season that holds myriad wonders and magic, it can also bring woe to kitties. But these Halloween safety tips for cats can keep your spooky season one of delight!

Halloween Safety Tips for Cats

Keep Kitties Indoors, Especially on The Big Night

My kitty brethren, heed my words! The first rule of Halloween is to stay inside! For some of you, that’s no problem, but for others who love to stalk the night, listen to my warning and stay in the house. Or on an enclosed porch. Or in the garage. Just stay somewhere where you won’t get mixed up in trouble when all the humans are out and about for the big night and its festivities. While most people just want to say hello to a kitty, there are creeps in the world, so stay in and avoid strangers altogether!

And pawrents, keep a close eye on your cats to be sure they don’t dash out a door in the comings and goings of the tricking and treating. If your cat is prone to rushing an open door or gets nervous at the sound of the doorbell, it might be a good idea to set them up in a quiet bedroom with food, water, litter, and a closed door to keep out the chaos.

Microchips are Magical

While we don’t want to think about a kitty getting lost from home, it’s good to already have some precautions in place, just in case. Microchips can help cats get back home again, and so can collars with ID tags that have your up-to-date contact information. These are things to take care of before Halloween, so you’re prepared for what-ifs that hopefully never come to pass.

Take Care with Kids and Cats

If your kitty isn’t one who spends much time around children, Halloween might not be the ideal night to start. If you have guests with kids, don’t force your cat into visiting with them. And make sure your furkid has access to a quiet, calm place to avoid children if they aren’t up for saying hello to little ones. Also, if you already know your cat doesn’t like children, go ahead and give them that quiet bedroom setup we discussed earlier.

No Candy for Cats

Sugar is bad for cats; ergo, cats should avoid candy. Chocolate candy is especially a no-no as it’s toxic to cats. And I’ll say this, even the smell of chocolate stings my nose with its stink. I don’t know how Mom and Dad can eat that garbage, but boy, do they. Even if you aren’t into chocolate, don’t give your cat any hard or chewy candies either. Both can be choking hazards. And those oh-so-crinkly candy wrappers can be, too, so be sure to keep those away from grabby kitty paws!

Use Caution with Spooky Décor

My mother takes great joy in decorating the abode for Halloween. I enjoy helping her. All those glittery skulls need to be touched because the spooky lights make them irresistible. But mom’s a spoilsport; she puts all the stuff I long to touch where I can’t reach it. But I’ve taken my revenge for being denied access. Mom can’t use fake spiderwebs anymore because I am a master of their destruction. And she got sick of untangling me from them and helping me get the webs off my tongue, so she stopped using them. Ha! Point: Forrest.

Seriously though, keep danglies, breakables, electrical cords, and other decorative cat temptations out of kitty’s reach. This goes double when it comes to candles. In fact, if kitties control your house, it might be better to stick with battery-operated flameless candles for safety purposes.

To Costume or Not

If your cat doesn’t care for costumes, you’re undoubtedly well aware of the fact already, so it’s best to skip it if you know your cat doesn’t care for dressing up. But if your furry diva doesn’t mind donning a fun disguise, be sure the costume is the right size and doesn’t restrict movement, sight, or hearing. And then, once your cat is dressed and ready, be sure you share their pictures with me and the rest of the cat lovers around here.

Now, after all this worry over Halloween safety precautions, your kitty might need a snack to soothe their worried mind, so don’t forget to feed the cat!

Exploring the Amazing World of Cat Eyes! Genetics, Color Changes & More

Have you ever cuddled your cat in your arms and stared into their eyes, and been blown away at how beautiful and unique they are? I certainly have! One of the most captivating features of a cat’s eye is their pupils, which are in the shape of vertical slits. Another is the big blue eyes that all kittens are born with. However, it’s the change that occurs in their eyes that is truly fascinating to me.

There is so much to discuss when exploring the eyes of a cat, from rare eye colors to color changes – so let’s get into it!

Rare Eye Colors

You may think your cat’s eyes are the prettiest you’ve ever seen, and you might be right, as some cats boast rare eye colors. Most eye colors are passed down to kittens genetically, with their eye color being determined by the amount of melanin in their DNA.

Dichroic-Colored Eyes

One of the rarest forms of eye colors in cats is dichroic-colored eyes, which is when an eye has two colors due to different levels of melanin in different areas of the iris. It can be found in any breed and can occur in just one eye or both.

Odd-Colored Eyes

This type of eye color is more common in Persians, Turkish Angora cats, and other white or mostly white cat breeds, but it’s still pretty rare. Medically known as heterochromia iridium, odd-colored eyes are when your cat’s one eye is a different color from the other. It’s a condition that is typically congenital or hereditary or caused by an injury, accident, or certain medications.

Orange and Copper

It’s quite unusual for cats to have enough melanin in their eyes for them to be dark in color, as with orange and copper-colored eyes. These eye colors are striking and definitely stand out in comparison to other lighter-colored eyes. Maine Coons and cat breeds with darker coats are more likely to boast these gorgeous eye colors.

Other Rare Eye Colors

Although more common than the eye colors listed above, brown and hazel are eye colors that are fairly rare. Wild cats are more likely to have hazel-colored eyes than domestic cats.

Blue and green-colored eyes have lower amounts of melanin in the iris due to genetics. Some breeds boast shades of these colors, such as the Siamese cat. Common green cat eyes are usually mixed with undertones, but solid, vivid green eyes, as with the Egyptian Mau or Russian Blue breeds, are quite rare.

Yellow and amber colors are most commonly seen in cat eyes.

Do Cat Eyes Change Color?

If you’ve rescued a young kitten or your cat had kittens, you may have noticed that the litter initially had blue eyes but may not have that color anymore. Yes, their eyes have changed color, but it’s completely normal.

In fact, all kittens are born with blue eyes, but not all cats have this color of eyes because their eyes change into their true color between 6 and 8 weeks until they’re around 12 weeks of age. From 12 weeks, their eye color shouldn’t change again unless they have certain health issues.

Some cats will always remain with blue eyes, which is the result of a lack of pigmentation in their irises. Their eyes appear blue because of refracted light and not because their eyes are actually blue. If a cat’s eye color remains blue as they mature, it’ll likely darken in its shade of blue.

Why Do Eye Color Changes Occur in Kittens?

When kittens are still young, their irises don’t contain enough melanin to display their true color. It’s only as they develop that their eyes begin to produce the melanin that creates their true color, which is typically around 7 weeks.

If a cat has bi-colored or dichroic-colored eyes, they’ll also have begun their life with blue eyes, and as they develop and the melanin is produced in their eyes, their condition will become noticeable.

Before 7 weeks of age, kittens are dependent on their mothers for warmth and nourishment and rely more heavily on their smell and touch senses. As they grow older and become more independent, their need for sight grows, and their eyes develop fully.

Do Eye Color Changes Occur in Adult Cats?

Eye changes in adult cats do occur, but not naturally. It is usually a sign of a health issue or eye condition that requires urgent vet care. Delaying treatment may be fatal or may result in the loss of their vision in one or both eyes.

If your adult cat has experienced a sudden eye color change, it might be due to uveitis, cataracts, corneal ulcers, corneal sequestrum, and eosinophilic keratitis. These are all eye conditions that can change your cat’s eye color to pink, red, brown, white, gray, or black.

If the whites of your cats’ eyes have turned yellow, they may have jaundice, which is a symptom of an underlying health condition. Although there are several conditions that may cause jaundice, it is a sign that your cat isn’t well and they need urgent vet care.

Do I Need To Be Alarmed If My Cat’s Eyes Change?

Sometimes a slight change in color in your cat’s eye isn’t something to be alarmed by as it could have a simple explanation, such as different lighting. When light refracts off your cat’s eye, it can sometimes cause them to look a little different, especially if your lightbulb is changing color.

In poorly lit environments or when your cat is scared or excited, their pupils will dilate and grow wider, which could make your cat’s eyes look mostly black. This is completely normal, and if you add a light or two, their pupils will contract and narrow to better display their colorful irises.

Do Cats Eyes Glow?

If you’ve ever been out for a walk at night with your flashlight and spotted two eyes staring back at you, you’ve spotted a nocturnal animal. If it responds with a “meow,” you’ve spotted a cat.

Cats have a reflective layer at the back of their eyes that produces that “glow in the dark” appearance. The layer is called tapetum lucidum, and instead of glowing independently, it can only reflect light back. It doesn’t only look cool, but it helps your cat see a bit better in low-light environments.

Cats’ eyes have always been fascinating to me since their colors are so diverse. Cats can have blue, green, hazel, orange, copper, brown, yellow, or amber eyes, with some colors more commonly seen than others. Although rare, many cats have bi-colored or dichroic-colored eyes, which can be congenital, hereditary, or the result of trauma. You’ll typically only know what color your cat’s eyes will be from around 8 to 12 weeks of age.

Woman Finds 3 Kittens Running Right Up to Her, and Knows They Need Her Help

A woman found three kittens running right up to her, and knew they needed her help.

Donna, an animal rescuer @feralcatcolony, has been caring for community cats, getting them spayed and neutered and helping friendly kitties find forever homes. She was at a cat colony on a Saturday when she came across three tiny newcomers.

She noticed extra food left in the area and thought someone had come to feed the cats, until three pint-sized kittens emerged from the shadows.

As soon as the kittens heard Donna’s voice, one by one, they all came running to her.

The grey kitten was the first to make his way to Donna, and his two siblings trailed closely behind him.

They immediately activated their purr motors upon being held. The grey kitten even started stretching his happy paws. After getting all cleaned up, they scarfed down some food and were quickly tuckered out in a bed, catching up on some sleep.

The kittens were abandoned at the location without a mother in sight. At just four weeks old, they weighed under a pound and needed round-the-clock care. Donna didn’t hesitate to take them in and set up a comfortable space for them.

“They had a great night, using the litter box, eating and drinking like champs,” Donna shared with Love Meow.

After a visit to the vet and treatment for their eyes, the feline siblings were on the mend and began filling out. “They need to fatten up and grow big and strong. And that’s what I plan to do.”

The kittens, lovingly named Woody (grey), Bryson (black tabby), and Kenzie (solid black), figured out how to eat from a dish and kick-started their weaning process on their own.

When one of them took the lead to try solid food, the rest of the crew followed suit.

“They were truly three of the smartest little 4-week-olds I’ve ever fostered. They taught themselves how to cat. I did very little to show them the ropes. They wrestled, played with toys, snuggled together and loved each other.”

In just one week, Kenzie and Bryson surpassed the one pound mark and were catching up to their brother Woody. It didn’t take long until they made their first escapade outside the playpen and into the vastness of the house.

“They made for some fun and laughs here in our home. Kenzie is extremely loving and just melts in your arms. She holds her own when it comes to her brothers,” Donna added.

The kittens rumbled and tumbled everywhere they went. Woody discovered his penchant for shoulder rides and encouraged his siblings to do the same.

“They are purr machines that enjoy using me as their cat tree.”

When the three were big enough for adoption, they were spayed and neutered and then joined the adoption program at Cats Are People, Too! Club to help them land their dream homes.

Woody quickly won over a wonderful family with another cat, a dog and two loving human sisters. Bryson and Kenzie, a bonded pair, were adopted together into a great home. They will never be apart.

“We had a blast fostering these babies. They brought us nothing but fun, joy, happiness and tons of laughs,” Donna said.

The trio have come a long way and are now thriving with their forever families, living the best life.
